Understanding Dyslexia

What dyslexia is, and isn't

Dyslexia is a common, well-researched learning difference that affects how the brain processes written language. It has nothing to do with intelligence or effort, and with the right approach, kids with dyslexia can become strong, confident readers.

Common signs

  • Trouble sounding out unfamiliar words
  • Reading that's slow, effortful, or inconsistent
  • Strong verbal skills that don't match reading ability
  • Avoiding reading or getting frustrated during homework
  • Difficulty with spelling that persists despite practice

What actually helps

  • Structured, systematic, multisensory instruction
  • Explicit teaching of how sounds and letters connect
  • Lots of practice with immediate, supportive feedback
  • An approach that builds confidence alongside skill
  • Consistency, ideally one-on-one
My Approach

A hybrid method built specifically for dyslexia

I use a hybrid, phonics-based, multisensory approach drawing from Orton-Gillingham, Lindamood-Bell, and C.R. Learning, trained in the highlights of each by my mentor, Mare Langlois, who held certifications in all three. This method is proven especially effective for students with dyslexia, and I bring 20+ years of experience adapting it to how each individual child learns.

What Parents Say

Real progress, from families like yours

"As a struggling reader with dyslexia, he faced numerous challenges that often left him feeling defeated. From the moment he began working with Cristie, everything changed. His confidence has soared, and he is now reading at a level we couldn't have imagined."

The Spencer Family

"Cristie has been an absolute gift for our 4th grader. She worked patiently and skillfully with him through the challenges of dyslexia, meeting him exactly where he was. Reading has gone from something he struggled with to something he truly enjoys."

Sarah, parent

"She went from a dyslexic second grader who could barely read to a voracious and curious reader. We can barely keep up with her reading pace. She provided an invaluable service to my daughter and her learning journey."

Questions Parents Ask

Dyslexia tutoring, answered honestly

Does online tutoring work for dyslexia?

Yes. If we choose to do sessions online together, I use the same structured, multisensory methods I'd use in person, adapted for a screen. What matters most is consistency and engagement, both of which translate well online.

Do you require a formal diagnosis before starting?

No. Many families come to me with a formal diagnosis, and many come simply knowing their child struggles with reading in ways that don't add up. Either way, I meet your child where they are.

How is this different from what my child gets at school?

School support is often shared across a group and constrained by time. This is one-on-one, consistent, and built entirely around how your specific child thinks and learns.

What ages do you work with?

I've worked with a full range, from early readers just starting out to teenagers building stronger writing and fluency. Every plan is built around the individual student.
